Habitat kick-off meeting agenda - 10/25/05

  • Introductions
    • Frank Baldiga and Tony Pizza
    • Our roles: volunteer coordinator, interface with St. Luke and Habitat.
  • Important: Sign-up at table: name, phone#, email address, contact method. We need it to contact you.
  • Take handouts with import information: contact information, directions, tools, web addresses. I will also post them to the STA web site.
  • Basics
    • This is the 4th house STA has worked on.
    • St Luke – we are partnering with St. Luke on this house. They are the primary sponsor. We will work with St. Luke each Saturday.
      • Chris Quinby – overall lead person from St. Luke
      • Dick Dumas – construction lead from St. Luke
      • Bill Collins – St. Luke
    • Start date – delayed until December or later
    • Location – Idlewood Village in SE Raleigh off Rock Quarry Road. See handout and web sites for directions
      • Parking – Upper Room Church of God
    • Work day – every Saturday (weather permitting) from 8:30- 3 or 4 pm.
      • 1/2 days are fine. PM is very helpful
      • Not on holiday weekends
      • 16-20 weeks
    • How many volunteers are needed: 8-10 STA volunteers each week depending on tasks
    • Experience is not required. Come for the tasks you are interested in, help with lunches, etc… Come as often as you want.
    • Teens – 16 and older. Ages 16-17 must have parental/guardian consent form - http://www.habitatwake.org/d/consent_form.pdf. Sixteen- and 17-year-olds may participate in general construction tasks, but may not use power tools, operate construction vehicles, or participate in activities that are clearly dangerous.
    • Tony to cover stages of building a Habitat home
      • 3-5 bedrooms, min 2 baths, from 1040 to 1610 sq ft.
      • All HH homes meet or exceed building standards and  are energy efficient
      • Habitat does electrical, foundation, drywall, HVAC, and landscaping. We do the rest.
    • Lunch is provided. We could use volunteers to provide a lunch for 20-30 volunteers. 
    • Groups welcome – Men’s club, Knights of Columbus.
    • E-mail – we will be using email as the primary communication method.
      • We will send an email Tue/Wed each week with information and asking for volunteers. It will include the scheduled tasks for the following Saturday. Please come even if you do not reply. Come any time!
      • We can call you if you do not use or have email.
      • Email/call if you can make it (walk-ins welcome)
        • Why? So we can track your volunteer hours, know who is coming, etc..

  • Habitat basics –see flyer
    • HH is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry. Started in 1976.
      • Habitat Wake started in 1985, has built over 250+ homes in Wake county.
      • Habitat does not give hand-outs. Homeowners must provide down-payment and monthly mortgage and their own labor. Habitat makes no profit from house.
      • Cost – 60K. STA is contributing 5K. Thanks, Fr. David
    • Qualified homeowner – first-time homebuyer, one or more dependents under 18, Wake County resident, satisfactory rental history, reasonable credit history, steady income for 1 year, demonstrated need (due to substandard, unsafe, overcrowded conditions, or paying more than 1/3 or more of gross income on housing).
      • 250 sweat equity hours
      • 0% interest loan
      • Typical monthly mortgage payments are $425 including tax and insurance.
    • ReUse Center – 2400 Alwin Ct,, Raleigh.  Habitat sells building materials and furniture to public at discount to support HH homes. Consider donating if remodeling.
  • What to bring/Tools
    • See Habitat web site for build schedule, tools to bring that day, etc..
    • Basic – gloves, hammer, tape measure, tool belt, pencil, tape measure, level. Other tools are optional – circular saw, etc..
    • Label all tools
    • Water, sun screen
    • Wear good shoes. It can get muddy there.
  • Lunch
    • Sponsor a lunch.
    • Lunch can be simple – sandwiches, pizza, fruit, drinks
    • Reimbursement possible from STA
