Brown Bag

Matthew 25:35 For when I was hungry you gave me to eat….

About Brown Bag

Brown Bag Ministry was co-founded by St. Andrew parishioner Mary Jo Bukowski in March 2005. In 2010, Mary Jo married and relocated to New Zealand, but left Brown Bag Ministry in the hands of many dedicated volunteers.

At Saint Andrew over 1,400 brown bag lunches are prepared and distributed to the homeless, those at risk of homelessness, and those living in poverty every Saturday. Brown Bag Ministry volunteers, sign up online and meet at 9:00 a.m. to prepare the brown bag lunches in the Fellowship Hall.

After the brown bag lunches are prepared, the brown bag lunches are distributed by various ministries to communities in and around Raleigh, Durham, and Clayton.

Brown Bag Ministry is also responsible for preparing and serving two hot lunches every month. The hot lunches are prepared and served on the 2nd and 3rd Saturdays of the month. Brown Bag Ministry prepares the meal in the St. Andrew kitchen and cooks enough to feed 200 individuals.

Key events and projects that Brown Bag Ministry highlights every year include the following:

  • April-May: Rice and Bean Collection for migrant workers in southwest Wake County.
  • September: Preparing and serving lunch for the Capital Area Rally for Recovery.
  • October: Preparing and serving lunch for the Capital Area Veterans Stand Down.
  • November-December: Christmas Eve Gift Bags for the South Wilmington Street Center.

Please go to the Brown Bag Ministry Donate tab, to view a calendar of items Brown Bag Ministry – Apex will be collecting each month of the year.

Volunteers from area churches (of all denominations) and their youth groups, Scout Troops, Y-Tribes, young adult clubs, service organizations, high school and college clubs and societies, and many other organizations, as well as families and individuals help prepare and distribute the brown bag lunches.

Brown Bag Ministry would not be possible without the financial generosity of many companies, organizations, and individuals.

Brown Bag Ministry also serves out of the following churches in Wake County. If one of these churches is closer to you to, please go the Brown Bag Ministry Site tab to see when these sites operate and for volunteer opportunities:

  • St. Catherine of Siena, Wake Forest, NC
  • St. Eugene, Wendell, NC
  • St. Francis of Assisi, North Raleigh, NC
  • St. Philip Lutheran Church, North Raleigh, NC
